Smart City

A Smart City, or smart city, is an area (primarily a city or municipality) that uses various types of electronic data and advanced technologies to improve the efficiency of city services, enhance residents’ quality of life and promote sustainable development. By integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities can collect and analyze real-time data to make informed decisions and respond to a variety of urban challenges.

The MEET HET core components for a smart city:

  • Data collection and analysis: Real-time data is collected via sensors, cameras and other IoT devices scattered throughout the city. This data is then visualized and analyzed on a platform to gain insights and identify trends.
  • Advanced infrastructure: Smart cities invest in modern and innovative infrastructure equipped with technology to operate more efficiently, such as smart street lighting, smart traffic systems and energy-efficient buildings.
  • Creating sustainable development: Through the use of smart technologies, cities strive to reduce their carbon footprint. This includes renewable energy sources, waste management, and water conservation systems, among others. In addition, smart cities seek to improve the efficiency of public services such as public transportation, health care, and emergency response. This made possible through technology and data analytics. In doing so, MEET HET always participates as much as possible in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Engaging citizens/Citizen science: MEET HET aims to actively engage citizens through digital platforms and applications, among others, since they have the most knowledge about their city or town.

Possible fields of application of MEET HET within the Smart City story:

  • Time-space data analysis: With advanced GIS and ETL tools, we can visualize and then analyze geographic data to identify trends and patterns.
  • 3D urban modeling: Our origins within MEET HET are in creating 3D models. So we possess all the expertise to create 3D models of urban areas. To then run simulations on these and visualize the impact of planned developments. This is useful for everything from designing new buildings to planning evacuation routes.
  • Real-time monitoring: By integrating sensors and IoT devices, we can collect and analyze real-time data on various topics such as traffic flows, air quality, noise pollution and other important urban parameters.
