Sam researches automation of scan to BIM

The importance of BIM model in the construction industry

Automation, it’s in high demand. Can we fully automate the process from scan to BIM? Sam is researching it.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a process by which digital models of buildings are created, managed and shared by architects, engineers and builders. The use of BIM has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, mainly because of the benefits it offers in terms of efficiency, cost savings and accuracy.

Researcher Sam investigates automation of scan to BIM

This month we are going to take a look behind the scenes at Sam, researcher at MEET HET. Together with KU Leuven, Sam is doing research on how to automate Scan to BIM in order to get our point clouds working as automatically as possible.

“I am currently doing research with KU Leuven for MEET HET.” explains Sam De Geyter. “We are doing research on an automation of the scan to BIM pipeline, to create as automatically as possible a BIM model from a point cloud captured by laser scanners.”

“That research consists of several steps,” says postdoctoral reasearcher Geomatics Maarten Bassier, “the first thing we’re going to do is make an interpretation of that point cloud. That’s how we extract structural elements such as walls, floors, ceilings.

“Once we have found it, we will build the BIM model in a first phase. In a second phase, we enrich this model with doors and windows, as well as domain-specific elements such as fire extinguishers. These are specifically recurrent objects that are very labor intensive to model manually.” concludes Maarten.

“Currently we are still in the start-up stage of the research,” Sam continued, “we are mainly concerned with how we are going to interpret those point clouds and classify them into certain classes such as walls and floors.”

“The research we do we try to make as relevant as possible to the field.” says Department Head of Geomatics Maarten Vergauwen. “We are glad that we can do this together with MEET HET. That way we can be sure that this automation is useful for people in the field.”
